What is Abjad?

Abjad numerals are a decimal alphabetic numeral system in which the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet are assigned numerical values. The system is most commonly used in Islamic culture for chronograms, calculations, and numerology. Each letter has a fixed value from 1 to 1000.

Eastern vs Western Abjad

Two main systems are in use. The Eastern (Mashriqi) order, used in the Middle East, follows the classic abjadī sequence. The Western (Maghribi) order, used in North Africa and Andalusia, swaps several letters. The first nine letters (1-9) are the same; differences appear in the higher values.

How to Use

  1. Type or paste any Arabic word, name, or phrase.
  2. Choose between Eastern and Western Abjad.
  3. See the total value plus a per-letter breakdown.
